Whole House Water Purification Systems

Question:
I'm in the process of replacing my current whole house waterpurification system. I'm trying to find the best way to layout thevarious components. I'm thinking it should go like this:

pressure tank -> sediment filter -> carbon filter -> UV purificationunit -> softnerWould that be the correct order?

Answer: Depends a lot on what is in your water, however, I have some questionsabout your system.

The 'sediment filter' -- you mean a string filter, ie, a 10"replaceable cartdrige, or a 'water softener-like' device? The smallfilter cartdrige will plug up, causing problems with your watersoftener. If you have 'junk' in your water, make sure whatever youuse to remove it dosen't reduce the flow rate to the system as itfills up with the junk. It usually happens so slowly that theconsumer dosen't even realize it.

RE the UV light: Remember that if you have water that stains, ie,iron or manganese for instance, the sleeve around the UV bulb willbecome stained, and the UV light can't pass thru to the water, rendering it useless. Best to place it after the softner.

Same thoughts on the carbon filter -- put it after the softner. Iwould just plug up with iron, causing premature failure.

You sure you need all that stuff?

And, rember that the word "purification" used in this system dosen'tmean that your water is "pure" ----- I would rather call it a "watertreatment system", but then I'm one who thinks that words havemeaning.......
