Question: I was doing my usual quarterly replacement of the carbon filters in myOmni undercounter water filter unit and noticed the cartridges lookeddifferent than the ones I used to buy. Lo and behold, the bottom ofthem screws off nicely, a foam pad comes out and there is all theactivated charcoal just waiting to be replaced. Next time around I'llsterilize the container and just refill the carbon. Cheap goodsmelling water! On a side note, while vacationing in Vermont I was drinking springwater. Co-incidentally, my food sensitivities seemed to lessen. Ican see how people 100 years ago became enamored with the idea ofmineral waters. I'll guarantee that the makeup of Vermont mountainwater is different than that of Florida water that touches nothing butcoral, coal, chlorine, and sand.
Answer: When we moved, we brought our whole-house water filter + undercounterRO drinking water filter with us, and made sure that the new house wasplumbed for easy installation. But we have never bothered to hook itup. We get a tiny bit of white residue on the fixtures (probablylime), but the tap water from our 240 ft. well, is clear, cold anddelicious. Even the ice cubes are good. We got lucky. I used to filter my water in San Diego with the activatedcharcoal sold for the externally-mounted aquarium filters. Can't remember exactly what it cost but wasn't much and alittle (couple of tablespoons) filtered quite a lot ofwater. Just cleaned it a few times with cold water to remove dustand once with boiling water, then used it for the drinkingwater. Obviously it isn't antibacterial, but I replaced itonce a month in any case.
