Question: I would like to draw your attention to a recent question posed ongurgle. I have not visited the site for a while, yet like all thingssyncronistic, there must have been a purpose in doing so. #553849 - Salt water conversion. Given the excellent and comprehensive answer by Landog, what are yourthoughts in regard to a more efficient process than that currentlyavailable? How might you combine remote floating desalination stations, with windpower backed up by solar cells? If the current systems also remove the essential base elements of waterrequired for good health, could we add those elements back to thedistilled water to enable healthy drinking water?
Answer: That was a super answer. For your purposes though, it partly dependsupon how much water you want. Minerals could be reinserted easy enough,most readily by just adding a little bit of the original salt water. I had an idea for an economical clothes drier. Natural drying takesforever in Scotland but driers use lots of energy. So how about vacuumdrying? All you need is a (reasonably) strong container which you suckthe air out of. Water will boil off at low temperature. Obviously thething would freeze without additional heat but this can be provided byambient. The evaporation product will be pure water (unless there arevolatiles). Worth a thought, eh. I also have been pondering the vacuum clothes drier for a very longtime ... well 30 years I'm not sure that water purification should require any energy input,and also reckon that a bit of desalinated slime would improve the mix.
