The importance of drinking water & ? about caffeine-free soda pop & FF Fig Newtons

Question:
I lost 1/2 pound overnight because I made sure to drink lots of water yesterday to offset the after-effects of eating out Friday night (water retention due to high salt content in food).

Question 1: I know you';re not supposed to substitute caffeinated beverages for your water consumption, but I drink the caffeine free Diet Pepsi and Coke. I don't drink in lieu of ALL the water, but I do drink it lieu of about 1/2 the water. Am I commiting a faux pas?

Question 2: I read on the WW Message Board that Fat Free Fig Newtons are 1 point, but when I checked the package today the calorie count for one cookie is 90 (on fatfreefoods.com it lists it at 100/cookie) Now that to me is 2 Pts, not 1. Am I right?

Answer: I honestly don't know if soda can be counted as water consumption, but I don't do it. The problem I see is that most sodas contain a good amount of sodium, seems like a double edged sword to me. If you replace soda for the water I would think you are going to retain more fluids ... to get rid of those fluids you would need to drink additional water - probably the required 6 glasses in addition to the soda.

Our meeting leader says you can substitute 1/2 of your water with caffiene free diet drinks but in the long run water is the preffered choice. I substitute.
