Question: Assuming I'm using a mixture of 1 gallon RO/DI per 1 tsp kalkwasser, though a standard airline tube converted for the purposes of feeding into a 45g tank (probably about 35 gallons of actual water considering displacement), how fast should the mix be dripping into my tank? I guess I'm looking for a drops per minute rate
Answer: The high flow area is important here, as 'Chief' said. Kalk pH is very high, so rapid dilution will help avoid 'bad' water flowing over things if you don't/can't drip into a sump. I drip 1-2 gallons of spiked Kalk daily 24/7 into sump where overflow hose pours out. I just set it to drip at about 2-3 drops/sec, a rate that works for me. I generally tweek it a time or two each day as height/pressure at drain valve lessens. (Gotta get me a dosing pump,LOL). No invert troubles and all coralline is doin' great. Do you have a cooling fan helping to evaporate water? With a smaller tank, you *may* have trouble getting enough water out so's you can replace it w/ Kalk. How many gpd do you need to add to your tank daily? That factor will also influence how fast you need to drip. Others can probably help more here, if needed, than myself. I believe you can lose the B-Ionic w/ *regular* Kalk use, though I am no authority on BI's use whatsoever. Never even seen a bottle of it Well 4lbs of kalk for 19 bucks at premium aquatics or 28 bucks for the 2gal bionic. I just bought the 4lb jar and I expect to still be using it in 2 to 3 years, how long does the 2gal last you? Why pay more money for the water to hydrate the solution when you can add it yourself for free. As for the trace elements I prefer to keep them somewhat seperate so I can add extra or less at peculiar times. Such as when coral fragging. Simple to add them to the kalk mix if you so choose. Besides kalk solution is also the top off water. Kalk used properly also does not raise alkalinity, at least mine never rose from it the trick is to drip only aqueous mix and not any that is in coarse suspension or the CO2 layer that forms on top
