Question: Does anyone have experience with this product or method of water purification? Is it superior or inferior to either standard iodine- or chlorine-based methods?
Answer: Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a synthetic yellowish-green gas with chlorine like odor. ClO2 is unstable as a gas and will undergo decomposition into chlorine gas (Cl2), oxygen gas (O2) and heat. However, ClO2 is stable and soluble in an aqueous solution. For example, solutions of approximately 1% ClO2 (10 g/L) may safely be stored if the solution is protected from light and kept chilled. In solution, ClO2 exists as a true gas. from the website: http://www.clo2.com/ The above site contains everything you might want to know about water treatment with ClO2. If you want more: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/factsheets/chlorinedioxidefactsheet.htm i picked up this water treatment about 2 years ago under the brand "Pristine". the two parts are A Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide B Food Grade Phosphoric Acid. you mix the two in container first, let sit for 5 minutes or so, the mixture turns yellow. you then add the water. stir. sit for 15 minutes. i haven't been sick using it, and i've been told it's far safer than iodine for long term use. doesn't "build up" in your system like iodine does. on the bottle "if water is very cold, cloudy or cryptosporidium is suspected", you double the amount of each part A/B, and let the water stand for 30 minutes. that can be annoying.
