Question: What is the best water filter for under the sink? We are geting a sink that has a separate attachment so we can attach a water filter underneath and drink from this tape when needed. But I am skeptical about the water filters out there now. I used to use the Britta water filter, but the copper dust irritated my stomach. What is another filter that I can use that will truly filter the water and not use copper or anything that can leak into the water. Maybe there is none.
Answer: The best is the one that removes and/or reduces those things found in the water that should be removed or reduced. What's your water source and analysis data? As long as you know your water is free of bacteria, and you aren't allowed to guess, you tested it; especially if you have your own well. The type of filter would usually be a carbon block preceded by a 1-5 micron sediment cartridge. If someone suggests an RO, they use the same type filters and if it 's a high quality RO, the same carbon block cartridge after the membrane and another GAC cartridge after that. You need to stop assuming and determine what and how much of it is in your water that may be bothering you (like bacteria colonizing that filter). If you dont you'll continue to suffer consequences of using that water. What is in the water may not be removed by the filter and in many cases, filtering makes a problem worse. Such as with bacteria problems. Have your water tested. Yes with regular carbon cartridges you run the water to remove "dust" caused by shipment and handling but you don't get 'fines' (dust) out of carbon block cartridges. They are not like regular GAC (granular activated carbon) cartridges, they're solid (unless damaged). And there is no comparison between the filters I suggested and a pour thru or faucet tip (toy) filters.
